Get a morning bus from near dehradun railway station and drive towards Sankri via Mussoorie, Damta, Purola, Mori and Netwar. It is one of the most scenic routes and is perfect for photography. Overnight stay in GMVN rest house/ homestay/tent.
After breakfast, begin your Kedarkantha trek. We start towards Juda lake. The trek is easy and the campsite can be reached in 3-4 hours. Juda Lake base camp lies in the middle of lush green meadows and is surrounded by Oak and Pine trees from all sides, making it one of the most scenic campsites in India. Camp overnight by lake side. Overnight stay in tent.
Wake up early morning to witness the most spectacular sunrise and enjoy the calmness till while sipping hot tea. After breakfast, start trek towards Kedarkantha base camp. This part of the trek takes you through dense coniferous jungles and the trail is rather interesting owing to rare Himalayan flora and fauna. In about 4 hours, reach Kedarkantha Base camp. Kedarkantha base is a campsite that leaves you wanting to stay there forever. Vast green meadows that look nothing less than a priceless painting portraying nature in its best form are indeed the best place to set camp and relax. Overnight stay in tent.
Continue your trek to Kedarkantha Peak from where you will see the spectacular snow laden peaks of Gangotri and Yamunotri. Take a breath at the peak and capture the beauty of having climbed a mountain. Descend down to base camp. Kedarkantha campsite is situated in open meadow stretching to the horizon meeting snow capped peaks. The view is unmatched and is breathtaking direct from the campsite.
After breakfast, start trek slowly towards Sankri via Juda Lake. Reach Sankri. Overnight in GMVN tourist rest house Sankri. Kedarkantha winter trek is a splendid journey to Himalaya for trekkers or hikers. Overnight stay in lodge/homestay.
Campsite of Juda talab is again a wonder. Surrounded by forest of high altitude coniferous pine forest a clear land by the talab creates the campsite.
Kedarkantha height (3800m)is so that it does not fall into a strenuous category and at the same time represent a proper himalayan trek. So after completion of this fabulous trek in Uttarakhand, we drive back early morning from Sankri to Dehradun on last day with the memories of a lifetime.

We will driving from the beautiful town of Dehradun to Sankri. The beautiful drive which marks the start of the Kedarkantha trek will be passing through Mussoorie.The River Tons will be visible and its famous for water rafting till it becomes the River Supin.We will make a stop at the Kempty Falls for our breakfast and we will drive for Purola.The roads will pass through the beautiful pine forests and then the whole valley will be visible.
Sankri a small village is a trekking hub and is the base camp for two treks- Kedarkantha and Har Ki Dun.The beautiful sleepy hamlet has an aura to it.
Altitude profile : 6500 feet to 9200 feet
Trekking distance and time taken: 4 km and 5 hours We will take the tar road which goes out of Sankri and move towards a village known as Sor.We will cross the village and then find the path which has a steep gradiant.This is the trail which leads to the Kedarkantha peak. The Kedarkantha trekking trail passes through thick pine forests and sharp ridges with flat meadows. After around an hour of trekking we will see the wooden bridge and then a deserted nursery. We move along to see the bridge over a stream and see the houses of the shepherds visible at a distance. The way to the Juda-ka-Talab starts here and you have covered a quarter of it.
The Kedarkantha trek shows the beauty of nature which passes through forests of maple and pine. You will be able to spot the Himalayan Langurs and Martens. You can also see the footprints of the wild boar. The Maple tree forest will lead to a dark forest in the southern end. The Kedarkantha trail will lead through the forest for Juda-Ka-Talab. The trail continues through the vegetation and there is a climb of 100 feet which will lead to a tree line. The climb starts with a steep ascend and a left turn through the dense forests and then we see the beautiful campsite of Juda-Ka-Talab.
The Juda-Ka-Talab is one of the most beautiful campsites with a setting that makes it impossible to forget. The left has a huge lake and the right has thick pine forests. The campsite is situated on mounds which are elevated at some locations. The Kedarkantha base camp trek will start from tomorrow.

Trekking distance and time : 4 km and 2.5 hours
The Juda-Ka-Talab trail will pass through the trail beside a lake while it ascends and then leads into the thick pine forests. The trail passes through the dark pine forests and we will see the vegetation clear out after a climb of half an hour. The Kedarkantha trek trail will move through the Juda-Ka-Talab and then ascend to around 850 feet over the Juda-Ka-Talab. The ridge will then lead to oak forests and then the climb will mellow down to a gentle ascend. The Kedarkantha trail will lead to an open meadow with log huts which are shepherd huts. The trail will pass through many of such huts and then there is another climb through the oak forests.
After moving through open meadows and areas of habitation often known as " Hut Point" we will move for the Kedarkantha Trek base camp stir which will be around 1000 feet climb from here. The altitude will be around 10500 feet.
We will now climb through dry oak forests and the last of the shepherd's hut with the view of the majestic Kedarkantha peak. The trail will pass through an arc comprising of Bandarpoonch,Kala Nag,Swargarohini and Ranglana among many others. We will reach the Kedarkantha base camp and pitch tents near one of the shepherd huts.

Trekking distance and time: 6km and 7 hours
Wakeup early morning to see the sunrise and then proceed for the Kedarkantha Peak trek.The Kedarkantha peak will be visible from the meadows. After a climb through the oak forests we will reach a straight climb to the peak. The Kedarkantha peak has a summit temple with Ganesh,Shiva and Parvathi shrines.The summit of Kedarkantha peak will be a half an hour from the base camp.
The view from the Kedarkantha peak with the Gangotri and the Yamunotri ranges will be a lifetime experience. You can also see the Chanshil pass and the Kinner Kailash ranges from the peak.
We will move towards the Hargaon campsite and through the same path through the Hut Point through the dark pine forests.
Altitude profile: 9000 feet to 6500 feet
Trekking distance and time: 6km and 4 hours of trekking
The trail from Hargaon campsite will mesmerize you again with its beauty. The trail to Sankri will start with a well paved trail which passes through the Har-Ki-Dun valley. The maple and pine forests will be seen and then pass through the farms of potato and cauliflower.
The descend will be through pine forests till we reach the GMVN and then rest for the night.
Distance covered: 220 km
Time required: 11 hours
We will drive for Dehradun marking the end of the trek. We will reach by evening.

The Kedarkantha Trek
This is trek of easy/moderate difficulty located in Uttarakhand at a height of 12,500 feet. It is surrounded by Govind National Park of Garhwal which makes it abundant in wildlife, flora and fauna. It should take about 5-6 days to cover depending on the season you decide to do it in. The summer temperatures range from 13-18 degrees while the winter temperatures range from 8-15 degrees during the daytime. It is advised that trekkers rest during the night because temperatures drop substantially. If the weather is favourable, you will be able to see peaks like Bandarpoonch, Black Peak or Swargarohini.
The Kedarkantha Trek Trek Villages
Sankri: This is the first village that you will encounter on your Kedarkantha journey. It will be different from villages that are situated deeper in the Himalayas because it falls right on the trek path. During the peak season, you will see many trekkers, tourists and local people who will help you. You will be able to find dormitories or lodges to stay here.
Saur: This village is close to Sankri and maybe more appropriate to give you the true Himalayan experience. If you happen to stay here for a while, then it is a visual treat to view the different tints of the snow capped mountains from here. You can discuss the rest of your journey with the snowpeaks smiling at you.
The Kedarkantha Trek Difficulty
For most people, this trek can be classified as easy to moderately difficult. The highest altitude of this trek is 12,500 feet which you will touch in 4-5 days. Since the climb is not very steep or very high, most people of all ages are able to manage this albeit in different durations.
The Kedarkantha Trek Route Map
Sankri is the first gateway to the Kedarkantha base. You will see a lot of forests and vegetation around here. It will be serene and an extremely good start to your journey. The greenery will definitely make you forget all the troubles of city life. You will get to experience these forests for at least 2-3 days depending on your speed. After this the snowy part of your terrain starts. It will be a pleasant surprise to experience the pristine snow immediately after all the greenery. Sankri is then followed by Juda ka Talab which is a lake that freezes in the winter. The site is an apt place for group activities. Even though one should be careful at night here because of wild animals, it is a beautiful place for some star gazing. You will reach the Kedarkantha base camp after this which albeit beautiful; can get very cold at night. Temperatures fall as low as -20 degrees in the winter at night. From here, the trek can get a bit steep to the Kedarkantha peak. You will get a complete view of the Garhwal region here as well as the Shiva trishul. After you admire the beautiful views on top, you will come down to the Hargaon base camp which should not take that much time. Some might like sliding down the snow from here!
The Kedarkantha Trek Weather
This region is snowed in from December till April. It’s a different kind of white desert here! It is not unusual to have sub-zero temperatures during this time and especially at night. Although the climate will be frigid, the snow is the beauty of this trek. This is why one needs to have all the right attire and fitness levels to match this weather. It is advised that trekkers walk 4-5 km every day for a couple of weeks before going on this or any trek so that they can enjoy the beauty a little more.
