Roopkund, situated at an altitude of 16000ft in the district of Chamoli in Garhwal region (State of Uttarakhand), is often called Mystery Lake or Skeleton Lake. Length: 8 days; from Kathgodam the journey will start. The base camp will be Lohajung which is situated at a 6-7 hours driving distance from Kathgodam.
Access: Kathgodam is well connected to other cities by Railways and Roadways. You can avail bus or train from Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow etc.

Roopkund is situated at an elevation of 5,029 mts above sea level in the base of Trishul peak and Nanda Ghunti. Roopkund is also known as ‘Mystery Lake’ since human skeletons and remains of horses from the palaeolithic age were found here. Many stories were also made about the mysterious human skeletons of Roopkund. According to research it was indicated that the people were from the 12th century to the 15th century who died of hailstorm. But it is still a mystery that what were those people doing there. The lake is nestled amidst panoramic mountain scenery, surrounded by rock-strewn glacier. Roopkund remains frozen for almost all the time of the year. The skeletal remains around Roopkund are believed to be 500-600 years old.
Kathgodam- Lohajung- Didna (8 km)- Bedni Bugyal (8 km)- Bhagwabhasa (8 km)- Patar Nachauni via Rupkoond (12 km)- Ghairoli patal (6 km)- Lohajung via Wan (5 km)- Kathgodam
Day 01: Kathgodam - Lohajung
You will be picked up from Kathgodam and we start our journey to our base village Lohagunj in the morning in local transport. Lohajung is situated at 6-7 hours driving distance from Kathgodam. We stay at Lohajung for the night.
Day 02 : Lohajung - Didna
Our actual trek starts today. Today we will cover approx. 8 km distance from Lohajung to Didna. We stop at Didna at the the end of the day's trek to take rest.
Day 03: Didna- Bedni Bugyal (via Ali Bugyal)
Today we start early so that we get enough time to enjoy the beauty of Bugyal. We cover 8 km and finally stop at Bedni to set up the night camp.
Day 04: Bedni to Bhawabhasa
Bhagwabhasa is the last point where we stop before reaching Rupkoond. Today also we cover approx. 8 km trek distance. Final halt at the Bhagwabhasa campsite.
Day 05 : Bhagwabhasa- Patarnahchauni via Rupkoond
We start climbing to the Rupkoond. The road here is fully snow covered. A moderate steep climb takes us to our destination Rupkoond ‘The mystery lake’. After becoming victorious we trek back to Patar Nachuni for a night’s halt.
Day 06 : Patar Nachauni- Ghairoli Patal
We will start early today. The entire trail is a lush forest trail. When we saw a flat opening in the midst of forest, wherein lay two cute Fiber huts. Yes, we have reached the destination of the day – Ghairoli Patal. We camp here for the night.
Day 07 : Ghairoli Patal-Lohajung via wan
Today we will trek about 5 km which will lead to the village of Wan from where we return to the starting point of journey, Lohajung.
Day 08 : Lohajung- Kathgodam
In the morning take the car or bus service to reach Kathgodam. Depending upon service it may take up to 10 hours. The trip ends.
