Stroll around the market to know about the local lifestyle and their traditions, customs.

Day 03 : Shey, Thikse, Hemis and back to Leh (100 km)
Situated on a hillock 15 km. upstream from Leh was once the residence of the royal family. Shey is located on the road from Leh to Thikse Monastery. A large number of monasteries, stupas and rock carvings can be seen on this road. According to tradition, it was the seat of power of the pre-Tibetan kings. A 7.5 meter high copper status of Buddha, plated with gold and the largest of its kind is installed here.
Thikse Monastery is 47 Km from Leh on the west bank of the Indus, the richest monastery belongs to Dugpa Kargyutpa order. It is built on a green hillside bordered by spectacular mountain scenery, is hidden in a gorge. It is the biggest and richest monastery in Ladakh and is must see for travelers.
Thikse Monastery is the largest in central Ladakh. There are superb views across the Indus Valley plain, from which the gompa at Matho (to the east), the royal palace at Stok (across the south) and the former royal palace at Shey (to the west) are clearly visible. It contains a 15 meters high statue of Maitreya Buddha - the largest such statue in Ladakh with a height of two storeys of the building.

An observation of the landscape during the entire journey is that all time distance calculation seems wrong here, what looked to be a twenty-minute crossing may simply require an hour.

Point to be noted before going for a bike trip to Ladakh:

Roads are well maintained in Ladakh but the meaning of well-maintained on such a high altitude mountain pass is very different. There are lots of pot holes and at different places the roads are too narrow. The average speed at which you drive is 20-30 kmph max. And not to mention the low level of oxygen at the altitude of 14000 feet. In many areas ascent are very steep where even RE also becomes a low performer and may not respond to the accelerator.
