Kareri Lake near Mcleodganj, Himachal Pradesh at an altitude of 3000m is a shallow fresh water lake. It lies in the Dhauladhar Range of Himalayas. Dhauladars act as a water source for this lake owing to melting of snow. Kareri lake hiking. The temperature of Kareri lake in winter goes below freezing point to -5 degree centigrade and in spring generally lies around 5-10 degrees in night.

The trek starts from the Kareri village which is 27 kms from Dharamshala. It is a quaint beautiful village. Kareri village is connected to Dharamshala through a motorable road, though the road condition is average to poor. Groh, Chadi and Ghera are the villages on the way from Dharamshala to Kareri village.
A clear day at Kareri village provides a vivid view of Indrahara Pass and Moon Peak which is highest peak of Dhauladhar Range.
1st day: 20 km drive from Mcleodganj to Ghera village and 5 Kms Trek from Ghera Village to Harnala
We will start our journey for kareri lake trek early in the morning from Mcleodganj at approx. 10 AM in the morning. The journey from Mcleodganj to the first base village of our kareri lake trekking .i.e. Harnala village itself takes approx. 1 hours driving and 3 hours of trekking. The distance is 30 km and the car journey is very scenic. We will have a stroll around the small, beautiful, Himachali village of Harnala.
During the whole trek we will hike alongside the river Nyund which serves as the primary source of water for all Kareri lake trek trips.
After initial hike of 2 hours, forest trails starts which is a steep climb. After taking lunch break (Will carry packed lunch) enroute, we will reach Harnala village, one of the best camping place in Kangra Valley and en-route kangra Valley. It is ideal place to camp due to flat area and availability of water. Snacks will be served at around 6 PM and dinner at 8. If weather permits, we would have bonfire.
Day 2: 10 Km Trek (Harnala - Kareri Lake)
After breakfast at 8AM in the morning we start our trek to Kareri lake at 9AM. Today it is 10 km trek and will take approx. 5 - 6 hours to reach the Kareri lake. Kareri lake serves as the base campsite for Minkiani pass trek and Baleni pass trek. After reaching to the campsite we set up our camp and explore the lord Shiva Temple there.
Evening snacks would be served at 6 PM & dinner at 8 PM. We would camp overnight at Kareri Lake and have bonfire if weather permits.
Day 3: Trek back from Kareri Lake to Kareri Village / Harnala and the trek back to Ghera from where drive down to Mcleodganj
Day 3 will be a long day but not tough on trekkers as we will be descending mostly. After early morning wake up have breakfast, then start your return trek from kareri lake to Kareri village or Harnala. We shall reach Harnala by 12 AM, reach Ghera by 1 PM and reach back to mcleodganj by 2 PM. You can reach Dharamshala bus stand by 1 more hour.
Can I club kareri lake trek package with Triund and Laka glacier trek?
It is not possible to club Kareri lake with Triund trek or Laka glacier trek as they lie in the opposite direction. You can do Triund and Laka separately and then come back to Mcleodganj and start for Kareri lake.
Can people join from Dharamshala for Kareri lake trek?
Dharamshala is 12 kms from Mcleodganj. Pickup would be arranged from Mcleodganj. So if someone wants to join from Dharamshala then he/she needs to reach Mcleodganj bus stand by 10 AM. This Kareri lake trekking and camping is inclusive of Transportation charges from Mcleodganj to Mcleodganj
My bus will reach at Dharamshala at 8 AM or later in the morning? Can I join as starting time stated as 10 AM from Mcleodganj?
Maximum we can stretch till 11 AM. It wont be possible to wait more as other group members would also have to wait. Starting late means late reach to first camping site, of the trail to Kareri lake
What kind of food will you provide (in Lunch and Dinner)?
We provide healthy and hygienic vegetarian food to boost the energy lost while trekking. Food in lunch and dinner includes Rice / Roti, Rajma/Dal, Dry Veg.
One point to note is we wont allow alcohol during the entire trek.
What will be the maximum team size and how many guides & porters will be there during Kareri lake trek?
Maximum group size would be 25 excluding trek lead, guides. There would be 1 Trek Lead/ local guide
Will the option be available of porters carrying my bag so that I can trek without my bag?
Yes porter facility would be available for carrying bags. It would be at extra cost which is Rs 200 per person per day. That amount needs to be paid on spot to the trek lead.
What about washroom? Do you carry separate toilet tents?
Yes it would be safe. For the convenience of our clients, we do pitch toilet tents near our campsite.
Tents are Twin sharing or Triple sharing?
we have wide tents that can accommodate 2 people comfortably along with rucksacks. It would be on twin sharing basis generally
Sleeping bags will be provided? Sleeping mat, liners etc. for Kareri lake trek?
Yes, we would be providing sleeping bags, mattresses, and fleece linings. Our sleeping bags are triple layered with fleece linings which can resist temperature of -20 degrees Celsius.
What is the minimum and maximum group size for Kareri lake trek?
We need minimum of 4 people for this trek to organize. Maximum group size is 25. However we can arrange it for a minimum of 2 people also at same cost
How is Kareri lake trekking experience?
Kareri lake is a small high altitude Himalayan lake created by glacial water. In winter the lake gets frozen completely and in spring the lake becomes a beautiful turquoise blue water lake. The trekking to Kareri lake combines hiking through villages, hilly trail, forests and sometimes involve steep climb.
How is Kareri Lake weather?
Best season for Kareri lake trek is mostly March to November. December onward the lake gets frozen. In winter the temperature will be mostly sub zero in night and around 2-8 degree centigrade during in daytime.
In summer temperature revolves around 12 - 18 degree centigrade during day and 5 - 10 degree in night.
What is the Kareri lake distance from Dharamshala?
From Dharamshala the lake is approx. 30 km distant.
What is the distance and route from mcleodganj to kareri lake?
The distance from Mcleodganj to Kareri lake is around 20 km which is coverable by car and then the actual trek starts. From Mcleodganj drive to Ghera, then trek to Harnala and to Kareri lake.
Is there any facility of kareri lake camp during trekking?
Yes. You will be camping beside Kareri lake on 2nd night and on 3rd day you will trek back to Mcleodganj. All the arrangements of camping will be done beside Kareri lake only on 2nd night

Kareri village comes on the trekking trail to Kareri lake. So you will trek via Kareri village
