Preparation for Valley of Flowers Trek

Physical preparation for the Trek

This trek requires aveage 8-10 km of walking through steep ascend and descend. That means sometimes pressure on your  knees and waist. Working on your knees and waist will be beneficial. Try to use staircases in your building or office (5-8 floors a day)instead of lifts for at least one month before the trek. Also, start walking for an hours at least a day for min 1 month. In that way you will be in good shape.

Mental preparation

Valley of flowers trek is an easy graded trek. But it requires a lot of walking (8-10 km avg per day). So, just be ready to walk in high hills of Himalayas and you are good to go.

What all gears you require

This trek is predominantly a rain trek. Almost certainly it will be raining every now and then in July and August when you will be trekking. So getting a good poncho/ light coverall for waterproofing purpose is necessary. There are use and throw type cheap plastic ponchos available in Govindghat and Ghangria. One can also buy them if needed.

The route of Valley of flowers and Hemkund are well trodden. So getting a good trekking shoe and a walking pole is enough from Gears point of view.

If you choose the roadways, then the closet you can get is Govind Ghat. You can take a road trip from Dehradun to Joshimath which will take around 11 hours and further one hour from Joshimath to Govind Ghat. If you are thinking about starting the journey from New Delhi, then you will be able to reach Rishikesh in 6 hours of driving. Valley of Flowers best time to visit

Since the Valley of Flowers is covered in snow almost throughout the year, the best time to visit this place is between the months of June and September. This monsoon season is perfect since the weather is great and comfortable as well as the flowers are well bloomed fulfilling the very purpose of your visit. We will recommend you to avoid going to this place during the summer season since during that time the valley just commences to bloom, hence beating the whole point of the sketch. The winter season is too cold to bear and the valley gets immensely frozen for you to be able to take the most pleasure of it.

For trekking or otherwise, the monsoon season is the most favourable; the snow is totally washed off and it gives you an easy trail to navigate.

The valley opens on 1st June and closes on 4th October each year. The timings are from 7am till 5pm on each day that it is open.
